What Does It All Mean? - Thomas Nagel

Quote of the Day
What does it all mean is a highly recommended, and extremely readable introduction to some of the central areas of philosophy. It is often the first book that Philosophy students read for a general grounding on the subject as a result.

In 100 pages, Nagel manages to discuss such classic philosophical problems as the problem of knowledge (how is it that we can know anything?) to the mind-body problem (just what is the difference between body and mind, if any?) and then to various ethical subjects. Many of the questions he poses have been discussed for millenia, with trends as to the most likely or 'right' answer varying over time, and no doubt many of them will never be resolved - no agreed solution to the problem of free will seems to be in sight.

Ethical subjects Nagel looks at include the justice, death, and right and wrong. There's even time for a final look at the meaning of life. Each chapter is short and self-contained, and can easily be read in one session. All readers should find this a thought provoking and stimulating read, and may inspire them to go and read deeper on one, or many, of the subjects Nagel discusses.

Nagel shows the relavance of philosophy to our lives, and that it can be practiced by all and not just a select bunch of bearded individuals who traipse around in sandals haunting the halls of universities or other academic institutions. This is a definite must for anyone interested in exploring philosophy and some of the fascinating subjects therein.
