The Australian Open is the first grand slam tennis event of the year right at the start of the year. Therefore it can turn up some shock results as players are not yet in the groove and fast starters can do well, for instance in 2006 Marcos Baghdatis shocked many to reach the final. Here are some quotes from the Australian Open tennis in sunny Melbourne:
"I've had enough tennis for the week. I'm still in school so I'm going to relax by doing economics."
Maria Sharapova, ever the conscientious student as well as great tennis player
"It was just very exciting, diving in the tank with the sharks and the big stingrays and the mantas. It's a great world under water. I love it."
Patty Schnyder on 'relaxing' by swimming with sharks
"It's nice when you have 30-odd girls in bikinis cheering for you."
Andy Roddick on his female fans performance during his first match at the Aussie Open tennis.
"There's no such thing as an open draw. At least for me - I mean, obviously for Roger Federer, I think every draw feels open for him - but for me there's no such thing as an open draw."
Andy Roddick again on what the draw looks like for tennis genius and world number one, the Swiss Roger Federer
"I was getting to think I was emotionally ready for winning, which normally you shouldn't, but I can't block it out. I'm also just human."
Federer on thinking about his win over Baghdatis before it came
