Are you top banana? At the head is the person who is top banana, and the phrase was quite common in use though less so now in the twenty first century where it has perhaps fallen out of favour.
However most people still recognise the phrase and know what it means, but just where does it come from and why top banana and not, say, top apple, top orange or - dare one say it - top kumquat?
Well the fact is that no-one seems to know. However there are some wildly strange theories out there to do with dancing troups in a banana type shape with the 'top banana' being the person at the centre, but you probably wouldn't give such things much credence would you? Stranger things have happened, but it seems safest to say the origin of this one is unknown.
