We've all seen a barnstorming performance from time to time in our lives, but sadly they are often few and far between these days as performances drift into the banal and mundane rather more often than we would like.
The origin of this phrase relates to early travelling entertainers who were of no fixed abode. They often set up shop in a barn and did a night here and a night there.
This became known as barnstorming, and is the origin of the phrase apparently.
