The phrase about having a feather in your cap, or in one's cap, seems to be as old as the hills, and has it?
Well, the great and the good of days of yore used to wear feathers in their caps to show how wonderful they were, and some feathers were much more sought after than others.
So it was seen as a good thing. And some military and society based organisations also started allowing members to wear particular feathers depending on their rank and experience within that organisation or army.
And so the phrase to have a feather in one's cap came along as a good thing as it showed a certain kudos or even a certain level or standard of attainment had been met, and metaphorically it lives on today though few people perhaps actually put the feather in their caps these days!
