This is one of those happy little phrases that it's not only obvious what it means, and come to that, it is also fairly obvious what the origin is.
Yes that's right it comes from our flittering and flapping friends that are the birds of the skies, and even though that's obvious we thought we might as well list it here anyway as it is a phrase of note and therefore it comes under the jurisdiction of this phrases section.
Now, at the time it was seen as a very good thing to feather your nest, however over time it raises some eyebrows and people accused of feathering their own nest now are just as likely to be being accused of looking after themselves and being selfish as with admirable qualities, so the phrase's use has changed slightly over time.
