Jaywalking is the name given in North America for walking or crosses the road in an illegal manner.
Many Europeans find this concept very hard to understand not having this sort of rule, and so can easily get caught out in America if they cross the road at a place that is not designated - this is jaywalking.
The phrase comes from the loud and noisy bird that is the colourful blue jay... seen all over the place. Now when they came into the city all the lights would confuse them the poor little things and they would cross roads and all sorts, well it wasn't too big a move from there to jaywalking for any such crossing of the street.
