Everyone wants to lift themselves up the pecking order, don't they... there's nothing like being at the bottom of the pecking order at work and getting all the rubbish scraps of work, all the hassle, and not getting the cushy projects or the big pay cheque that comes with rising up the pecking order.
The origin of this phrase, sure enough, is the farm, and the fact that animals and chickens particularly seem to have a hierarchy as to who gets to eat what, and so they literally have an order in which they can peck.
And so it came to be that this phrase rather aptly and neatly captures a lot of the reality of life.
