We all know someone that likes to think that they rule the roost, or at least try too.
Historically a strong male or alpha male might be said to rule the roost at home, but little did he know unless he thought about it that he was being compared to the good old thing that is the male chicken, the rooster.
That's because he literally does rule the roost, with one male chicken having all the hens to himself and getting rid of all the other ones - hence he rules the roost, and the origin of this interesting little phrase that is still very popular and much used even today.
