If you have ever had a hot date only for that person to never turn up, then you will feel you have bee left in the lurch.
Anytime you are inconvenienced or outdone considerably, then you can be said to have been left in the lurch.
So what is the origin of this rather curious phrase - just what is 'the lurch?'
Well, it turns out that this relates to a French game called 'lourche'. Apparently in this game it was quite common for one player to quickly fall a long, long way behind their competitor - and so when this happened it was known as being left in the lourche.
This game is not played much now but will always be remembered for the phrase it spawned, that of being left in the lurch.
