It's hard to be cool and down with the kids forever, isn't it?
As we get older we get accused of being more and more out of touch, which shows particularly when it comes to popular culture and knowing who the famous celebs of the day are and the bands too.
The origin of the phrase out of touch comes from the military. Whilst marching it was required that people were close enough to each other that when they swung their arms, they would be able to be in contact with the person next to them.
If they fell out of order and out of the line, then they would literally be out of touch, and so it doesn't take a great mental leap to move from that position to the origin of the phrase, being to literally lose track and fall behind the times.
