If you've had it and the outcome is certain, if nothing and no-one can change the course of history to divert something from inevitably happening, then the writing is on the wall.
No matter what you do, it's all over - give up, pack up, go home - you're losing 5 - 0, you won't come back, the writings on the wall.
This phrase comes from the bible and refers to a message that could only be interpreted by Daniel. When asked what it meant he told the powers that be it meant that they were going to be destroyed. And hence the phrase we use today.
