Quotes:

Men always talk about the most important things to perfect strangers. In the perfect stranger we perceive man himself; the image of a God is not disguised by resemblances to an uncle or doubts of wisdom of a mustache.

No matter how vast, how total, the failure of man here on earth, the work of man will be resumed elsewhere. War leaders talk of resuming operations on this front and that, but man's front embraces the whole universe.

At a dinner party one should eat wisely but not too well, and talk well but not too wisely.
View quotes by W Somerset Maugham

Never say anything to hurt anyone. Moreover... refrain from double talk, from shrewd and canny remarks that are designed to advance our interests at someone's disadvantage. We are to turn our back upon evil, and in every way possible, do good, help people and bring blessings into their lives.

Most rock journalism consists of people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk for the benefit of people who can't read.

'Six months before he died, my grand-father came to Australia to try to explain to me that he was dying. I was a young kid, very much into myself at the time. I was busking on the streets just to make enough money to pay my rent, There was this Japanese restaurant I'd always wanted to eat at but couldn't afford, so I suggested we go there.' It was an unfortunate choice. In Weans' weakened condition, the smell of the rice and soya sauce brought back memories of the Second World War. 'We couldn't have the talk he wanted to,' says Crowe. 'The day he died, I was in the kitchen of a flat in Woollarah, (an eastern suburb of Sydney). 'Suddenly a kookaburra bird flew in the window. It just looked at me. I knew my grandfather had died. I phoned home and my mother confirmed it. 'I insisted the bird was my grandfather's spirit, but my mom would have nothing of it.' One day last year, Crowe had a dream in which he was holding his mother and she was crying. He phoned home immediately. 'My mother said a woman who had worked closely with my grandfather had come to visit and, without prompting, had told her that on the day my grandfather died a bird had visited her as well. 'Learning this had reduced my mother to tears.' Crowe says he believes that 'with all this talk of angels, maybe they are just birds sent to us by those who have crossed over.' Pre-game pep talk before facing England: 'Look what these bastards have done to Wales. They've taken our coal, our water, our steel. They buy our houses and they only live in them for a fortnight every 12 months. What have they given us? Absolutely nothing. We've been exploited, raped, controlled and punished by the English - and that's who you are playing this afternoon'

Talk to the point, and stop when you have reached it. The faculty some possess of making one idea cover a quire of paper is not good for much. Be comprehensive in all you say or write. To fill a volume upon nothing is a credit to nobody; though Lord Chesterfield wrote a very clever poem upon nothing

It was not a red card. The kid Messi is not just a very good footballer. He is more than that. He jumps and he provoked the contact with Del Horno, who is then sent off. I don't think I can talk about the game after that it was not a proper game, but I'm proud of my players. [on losing to Barcelona, 2006 champions league]

Peace is the most powerful weapon of mankind. It takes more courage to take a blow than give one. It takes more courage to try and talk things through than to start a war.

Italian girls are famous for being snobby and expecting men to make the first move. In America, if I don't make eye contact, the guys won't come over and talk. American girls just go for it.
View quotes by Silvia Colloca

The homosexual community wants me to be gay. The heterosexual community wants me to be straight. Every [writer] thinks, I'm the journalist who's going to make him talk. I pray for them. I pray that they get a life and stop living mine!

We talk about heaven being so far away. It is within speaking distance to those who belong there. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.

'Look neither Janet or me thought it was such a big deal. But when CBS and the FCC got so uptight, yeah, I lied about it and called it a wardrobe malfunction. I mean what else did you expect me to do? They could fine us big time for this which really sucks. I mean it's just a *@#?$£% tit! Now I wish we'd shown both of 'em and really given them something to talk about!' (to reporter Sandy Baker re Janet Jackson's nipple slip at the Superbowl)

Pele isn't my real name, my real name is Edson. A class-mate wanted to anger me with the name Pele, so I punched him and got suspended from school. I didn't want the name. Pele sounds like baby-talk in Portuguese

Let me advise thee not to talk of thyself as being old. There is something in Mind Cure, after all, and if thee continually talks of thyself as being old, thee may perhaps bring on some of the infirmities of age. At least I would not risk it if I were thee.

I have a very good family. I'm very fortunate to have a very good family. I believe very strongly in the family. It's one of the things we have in our platform, is to talk about it.

Twenty years of votes can tell you much more about a man than twenty weeks of campaign rhetoric. Campaign talk tells people who you want them to think you are. How you vote tells people who you really are deep inside.

When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.
