Quotes:

'It is by no means enough that an officer be capable...He should be a gentleman of liberal education, refined, manners, punctilious courtesy, and the nicest sense of personal honor... No meritorious act of a subordinate should escape his attention, even if the reward be only one word of approval. Conversely, he should not be blind to a single fault in any subordinate.'

Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is interesting; what they don't reveal is essential!

I never know what to get my father for his birthday. I gave him a hundred dollars and said, 'Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.' So he went out and bought a present for my mother.

Mine is the first generation able to contemplate the possibility that we may live our entire lives without going to war or sending our children to war.

Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality.

I'm like the most expensive, exotic item on a gourmet menu. People can wonder about the sensuous delights of the dish, but they can't afford such an expensive luxury

'Six months before he died, my grand-father came to Australia to try to explain to me that he was dying. I was a young kid, very much into myself at the time. I was busking on the streets just to make enough money to pay my rent, There was this Japanese restaurant I'd always wanted to eat at but couldn't afford, so I suggested we go there.' It was an unfortunate choice. In Weans' weakened condition, the smell of the rice and soya sauce brought back memories of the Second World War. 'We couldn't have the talk he wanted to,' says Crowe. 'The day he died, I was in the kitchen of a flat in Woollarah, (an eastern suburb of Sydney). 'Suddenly a kookaburra bird flew in the window. It just looked at me. I knew my grandfather had died. I phoned home and my mother confirmed it. 'I insisted the bird was my grandfather's spirit, but my mom would have nothing of it.' One day last year, Crowe had a dream in which he was holding his mother and she was crying. He phoned home immediately. 'My mother said a woman who had worked closely with my grandfather had come to visit and, without prompting, had told her that on the day my grandfather died a bird had visited her as well. 'Learning this had reduced my mother to tears.' Crowe says he believes that 'with all this talk of angels, maybe they are just birds sent to us by those who have crossed over.' 'If you represent yourself as nurturer and provider, you can create a relationship. You need to keep them healthy. You run your hands over them and make sure they don't have ticks. You check around their ears. The cows love all of this, because you're completely relaxed with them.

Sentimentality is the emotional promiscuity of those who have no sentiment.

On good friend Nicole Kidman: 'I've never worked with her. I met her through a couple good girlfriends of mine. She has a great sense of humor. She laughs easily. I like hanging out with people who laugh easily. Contrary to popular opinion, I like to be a little silly.'

On Will Smith (Ali):
'I met him in Michael Mann's (The Insider) office one day. He just walked in the door and I got this sense from him, this broader, spiritual thing, and that's something I gravitate toward.'

The power of a man, to take it universally, is his present means, to obtain some future apparent good; and is either original or instrumental. (Leviathan)

I almost resent the whole fashion thing. Good God - never wearing the same thing twice and all of those things. It's a pain in the ass.

I played a Bosendorfer when I was little. I felt a difference in the presence of this instrument. It was like it had a ghost protecting it. Sometimes it was sinister, others alluring. It was like the soul of it came from the underworld. I’ve played some Steins that I’ve had a relationship with For the most part, the Bosendorfers are hand made, you get the personality of the maker. It gives you more stuff to work with as a player. They’re live things, they really are.

Motherhood has a very humanizing effect. Everything gets reduced to essentials.

I don't believe in the so-called Latino explosion when it comes to movies. Jennifer Lopez doesn't have an accent. She grew up in New York speaking English not Spanish. Her success is very important because she represents a different culture, but it doesn't help me. I grew up in Mexico, not the US, and the fact is that there just aren't any parts for Latin actresses. I have to persuade people that my accent won't be a problem, but an asset.

"Of course I'm horrible. I am b**chy about people behind their backs and I can be callous, insensitive and brutal. I try to be good, but I am very wicked."

No man is an Island, entire of it self; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of they friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. (Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions)

"It is up to us to give ourselves recognition. If we wait for it to come from others, we feel resentful when it doesn't, and when it does, we may well reject it."

On what she sent to her director Brett Ratner: I sent him 'Porky's' on DVD because he once said he used to masturbate to that in high school, and I figured his copy was probably worn out.

It is God who is the ultimate reason of things, and the knowledge of God is no less the beginning of science than his essence and will are the beginning of beings.

Imagination is a quality given a man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humour was provided to console him for what he is.
