In crossing a heath,
suppose I pitched my foot against a stone, and were asked how the stone came to be there: I might possibly answer, that for any thing I know to the contrary, it had lain there for ever: nor would it perhaps be very easy to show the absurdity of this answer. But
suppose I had found a watch upon the ground, and it should be inquired how the watch happened to be in that place; I should hardly think of the answer which I had before given, that for any thing I knew, the watch might have always been there. Yet why should not this answer serve for the watch, as well as for the stone? why is it not as admissable in the second case as in the first? For this reason, and for no other, viz., that when we come to inspect the watch, we perceive (what we could not discover in the stone) that its several parts are framed and put together for a purpose . . . This mechanism being observed . . . the inference, we think, is inevitable, that the watch must have had a maker; that there must have existed, at some time, and at some place of other, an artificer or artificers, who formed it for the purpose which we find it actually to answer; who comprehended its construction, and designed its use.
View quotes by William PaleyI
suppose I do get sad, but not for too long. I just look in the mirror and go, 'What a f***ing good-looking f*** you are.' And then I brighten up.
View quotes by Liam GallagherI can't help detesting my relations. I
suppose that it comes from the fact that none of us can stand people having the same faults as ourselves.
View quotes by Oscar WildeThere is no law of progress. Our future is in our own hands, to make or to mar. It will be an uphill fight to the end, and would we have it otherwise? Let no one
suppose that evolution will ever exempt us from struggles. 'You forget,' said the Devil, with a chuckle, 'that I have been evolving too.'
View quotes by William Ralph IngeIt is rare indeed that people give. Most people guard and keep; they
suppose that it is they themselves and what they identify with themselves that they are guarding and keeping, whereas what they are actually guarding and keeping is their system of reality and what they assume themselves to be.

View quotes by William FaulknerWhat's an expert? I read somewhere, that the more a man knows, the more he knows, he doesn't know. So I
suppose one definition of an expert would be someone who doesn't admit out loud that he knows enough about a subject to know he doesn't really know how much.

suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.
View quotes by Mahatma GandhiI
suppose, in a way, this has become part of my soul. It is a symbol of my life. Whatever I have done that really matters, I've done wearing it. When the time comes, it will be in [this] that I journey forth. What greater honor could come to an American, and a soldier?

View quotes by Arthur MillerIn science, 'fact' can only mean 'confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent.' I

View quotes by Adam HollioakeThey say leather's mainly for perverts. Don't know why. Think it's very practical, actually. I mean, you spill anything on it and it just comes off. I
