Quote of the Day

Quotes:

'Six months before he died, my grand-father came to Australia to try to explain to me that he was dying. I was a young kid, very much into myself at the time. I was busking on the streets just to make enough money to pay my rent, There was this Japanese restaurant I'd always wanted to eat at but couldn't afford, so I suggested we go there.' It was an unfortunate choice. In Weans' weakened condition, the smell of the rice and soya sauce brought back memories of the Second World War. 'We couldn't have the talk he wanted to,' says Crowe. 'The day he died, I was in the kitchen of a flat in Woollarah, (an eastern suburb of Sydney). 'Suddenly a kookaburra bird flew in the window. It just looked at me. I knew my grandfather had died. I phoned home and my mother confirmed it. 'I insisted the bird was my grandfather's spirit, but my mom would have nothing of it.' One day last year, Crowe had a dream in which he was holding his mother and she was crying. He phoned home immediately. 'My mother said a woman who had worked closely with my grandfather had come to visit and, without prompting, had told her that on the day my grandfather died a bird had visited her as well. 'Learning this had reduced my mother to tears.' Crowe says he believes that 'with all this talk of angels, maybe they are just birds sent to us by those who have crossed over.' Being an old maid is like death by drowning, a really delightful sensation after you cease to struggle.

I've dated the sweet mama's boy, the musician rocker, the struggling artist - basically a lot of people without jobs.

"I have never smuggled anything in my life. Why, then, do I feel an uneasy sense of guilt on approaching a customs barrier?"

Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.

Who knows for what we live, struggle and die?... Wise men write many books, in words too hard to understand. But this, the purpose of our lives, the end of all our struggle, is beyond all human wisdom.

So, I am a b*stard, and the English are b*stards. But the really bad news is that you are too. My vision of Europe would be Europe of b*stards for whom the question of legitimacy was a site of endless struggle and contestation...

Life for both sexes is arduous, difficult, a perpetual struggle. More than anything... it calls for confidence in oneself... And how can we generate this imponderable quality most quickly? By thinking that other people are inferior to oneself.

'Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.'
View quotes by Arnold Schwarzenegger

It is wonderful to feel the grandness of Canada in the raw, not because she is Canada but because she's something sublime that you were born into, some great rugged power that you are a part of.

When you go home, tell them of us and say, 'For your tomorrows these gave their today'. (Inscriptions Suggested for War Memorials 1919)

I think we would struggle to get that one through (on the South Africa policy of 'no women, no alcohol')

A woman's love for us increases
The less we love her, sooth to say-
She stoops, she falls, her struggling ceases;
Caught fast, she cannot get away.
(Eugene Onegin)

Law is a reflection and a source of prejudice. It both enforces and suggests forms of bias

Sing, my tongue, of the battle in the glorious struggle

The perpetual struggle for room and food.

I suggested [in 1966] that we use the panther as our symbol and call our political vehicle the Black Panther Party. The panther is a fierce animal, but he will not attack until he is backed into a corner; then he will strike out. (Revolutionary Suicide)

Is it too much to ask that women be spared the daily struggle for superhuman beauty in order to offer it to the caresses of a subhumanly ugly mate?
View quotes by Germaine Greer

Everything you've learned in school as 'obvious' becomes less and less obvious as you begin to study the universe. For example, there are no solids in the universe. There's not even a suggestion of a solid. There are no absolute continuums. There are no surfaces. There are no straight lines.
View quotes by R Buckminster Fuller

There is no law of progress. Our future is in our own hands, to make or to mar. It will be an uphill fight to the end, and would we have it otherwise? Let no one suppose that evolution will ever exempt us from struggles. 'You forget,' said the Devil, with a chuckle, 'that I have been evolving too.'

If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.

The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. - Atlas Shrugged

Jim Courier did a great job of showing the rest what is possible. He could only hit forehands, but almost every one could have been a winner. But Jim struggled when others learned to hit the ball just as hard. Many look at Andy (Roddick) as being a similar animal, and it could well be in a few years everybody hits the ball as hard as him.

Myths and creeds are heroic struggles to comprehend the truth in the world.

Did you ever notice that the first piece of luggage on the carousel never belongs to anyone?
View quotes by Erma Bombeck

It is the nature of ambition to make men liars and cheats, to hide the truth in their breasts, and show, like jugglers, another thing in their mouths, to cut all friendships and enmities to the measure of their own interest, and to make a good countenance without the help of good will.
View quotes by Kenneth Tynan

The hardest struggle of all is to be something different from what the average man is.
View quotes by Robert Schuller

The world cannot be governed without juggling.
View quotes by John Selden

The work of many of the greatest men, inspired by duty, has been done amidst suffering and trial and difficulty. They have struggled against the tide, and reached the shore exhausted.
View quotes by Samuel Smiles

The battle of life is, in most cases, fought uphill; and to win it without a struggle were perhaps to win it without honour. If there were no difficulties there would be no success; if there were nothing to struggle for, there would be nothing to be achieved.
